What is EdTech - VIDEO

EdTech confusion

One of the most common experiences that I have had as an educational technologist is the confusion by so many people of Ed Tech and Information Technology. For so many people, these two terms mean the same thing, and they don’t understand the meanings of either term, the differences between them and the differences in the roles that people in these two different fields play. Since this is my major, I want to be able to clarify what these terms mean and be able to explain and illustrate the differences in these two separate fields. Even in articles and informal writings, there is confusion and interchangeable use of these two terms. For example, in an otherwise excellent article on educational technology in Wikipedia, the opening sentence reads, “ Educational technology, also termed instructional technology, information and communication technology (ICT) in education, EdTech, and learning technology” which implies that all of these terms mean the same thing, which they don’t, and which uses the words “information” and “technology” which creates confusion about any difference between Ed Tech and Information Technology .(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Educational_technology).

Education Technology

EdTech is a study and ethical practice for facilitating learning and improving performance by creating, using and managing appropriate technological processes and resources. In other words, use of technology in. form of products/apps/tools to enhance learning, pedagogy and instruction.

“My own definition of Instructional technology:

My picture has two main elements that define my understanding of the Educational Technology field and its boundary. These elements are human being and technologies such as a book, a board, a computer, a camera and the like.  These elements work simultaneously for a better learning. I believe with the rapid growth of the electronic technologies, we still need that board and papers in our classrooms and human being is still and will be the main element for the field because every technology facilitates the learning depends on the human talent.”  (Ilham Habci 2014)
